Reggae Music is a genre of music that was formed in the Caribbean island of Jamaica in the 1950's. The genre, which primarily was born out of the struggle for freedom and justice by descendants of African slaves who were kidnapped from Africa and left to live in squander on the former British colonial island of Jamaica, has its roots in African music as well as the Jamaican music genres of Rocksteady and Ska. Rastafarian culture, which is commonly associated with Reggae music, has influenced Reggae greatly, leaving an indelible mark on its content, message, and musical spirituality. Rastafarians of the diaspora who show gratitude and love for their homeland of Ghana and throughout West Africa as well as the spiritual homeland of the Rastafarian faith, Ethiopia, express this bond through their music. Our Reggae Streams showcase this passion which is the driving force behind the Rastafarians' repatriation movement to Africa.
